How To Detangle A Wig
It's the end of a long day. You have taken off your human hair wig and have placed it carefully on your wig stand to store for the night. Then, you see it: a tangle. Not just any tangle. This may be the world’s biggest tangle. You frantically grab your styling products and comb and get to work.
Let’s rewind. Are there ways to battle the tangle from the beginning? Like real hair wigs can experience tangles. In fact, wigs can sometimes be more likely to tangle due to the lack of natural oils of your scalp that natural hair has. These oils work like a natural conditioner that defends against tangles and knots. Of course, it’s not foolproof, as anyone can attest, but those oils help. Your wigs don’t have these oils, so they need your help to stay tangle-free.
Caring for your wig properly is so vital. A well-loved wig lives a long life. It’s really about protecting your investment. Tangles can damage your wig, but proper care can reduce them!
Conditioner: Place your hand with fingertips spread into the crown of your wig. Spray into the air three to four times and gently wave your wig through the mist. Gently brush, comb, or fingerstyle. Set your wig aside to dry before wearing or storing.
Detangling Technique #
a. Saturate the lace front wig with any moisturizing hair conditioner. Make sure the conditioner is applied evenly throughout, from roots to tips. Place the saturated wig in a gallon-sized plastic bag and seal. Wait two hours for the conditioner to penetrate.
b. Rinse off all the conditioner with warm water, using your fingers to make sure all of it is completely removed. Gently blot (not rub) the wig with a towel and place it on a wig stand. Let air dry.
c. For best results, place your wig on a wig head.
Depending upon how badly tangled your wig is, holding The Magic Mixture spray bottle approximately 6 to 8 inches from the wig, spray 1 to 2 times directly onto the tangled area. For tougher tangles, you may need to repeat this process and use more sprays.
d. Gently use a small, wig brush or fine-tooth comb to begin detangling, starting with small strokes from the bottom edge and working your way upwards in small increments towards the crown.
e. Brush or comb the hair on top of your fingers (usually, your forefinger and middle finger are perfect for this process). This prevents breakage and loss of the wig’s hair and gives you more control over the detangling process.
f. It is best to work on areas that are 1 to 1.5 inches wide at a time. Although this may sound like a time consuming technique, this is the fastest and safest approach to detangling a wig.
g. When finished detangling, set your wig on rollers and allow to air-dry.
h. When ready to style, remove rollers, hold The Magic Mixture approximately 8 to 10 inches from the wig, spray 1 to 2 times and shake gently to loosen curls.
i. Using a wig brush (not an ordinary brush or plastic-bristle brush), gently brush all of the curls over your fingers to break the set and then style as usual.
j. You can use a light misting of The Magic Mixture to hold your style before wearing your wig. Be sure to let your wig completely dry before wearing.
Even with all the care in the world, tangles can still happen just like they will with natural hair. Still, you want to take precautions to avoid as many knots and tangles as possible so that you stay looking fabulous all day long!
